One narrative is that he is a supporter of open-source, and this is just the next iteration of that lineage.
Another is that he just outfoxed all the AI regulators in the world by going open source.
Time will tell which story is right or, my guess, some more complicated mix of reasons like Mark hates Apple and Google and why not let Meta become the new open-source AI standard.
