data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/timothyneilrogers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim<\/a> explains his technique and top tips for his email marketing strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: When did you start doing email marketing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: Probably started in late 2021. I noticed that we were doing the right thing in collecting emails on our website, but we weren\u2019t doing anything to retain these subscribers or reward them for subscribing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: How did you learn about email marketing?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: I\u2019m definitely self-taught. I get inspiration from replicating what I see from some of the brands that inspire me. Not necessarily within the same industry. I first started out by making it aesthetically what I wanted it to look like. The platform I use is Privy and I have found it helpful in teaching you how to use certain features to learn a bit. Whenever I\u2019m unsure I\u2019ll YouTube something. What led you to Privy?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: It was a personal preference at first. I chose it because I don\u2019t like going with the \u2018main\u2019 platforms because I know they\u2019re going to be more expensive. And we were starting out really small. So I thought that by choosing a platform that was a bit cheaper, it would be limited, sure, but still achieve what I wanted at the time. I\u2019ve not needed to swap it over since I started using it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: What\u2019s your biggest email marketing tip for someone starting out?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: Adopt the rule of 1 promo email, followed by 2 content or interesting emails. The 1:2:1 strategy. If you\u2019re constantly just offering promos, it \u2018cheapens\u2019 the brand. But if it\u2019s just fluff and info emails, people lose interest. I\u2019ve found 1:2:1 a good mix.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: How often should emails be sent to your subscribers?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: I send an <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/email-marketing-strategy-for-improved-engagement\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/email-marketing-strategy-for-improved-engagement\/\">email<\/a> every 5 or 6 days. It keeps it fresh and relevant without overwhelming their inbox or coming across as \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgenius.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mailmeteor.com\/spam-checker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spammy\u2019<\/a>. It differs at different times, though. For us, it\u2019s Mon-Thurs after 7 pm for AEST (Sydney and Melbourne time).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>I know <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/mailchimp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mail Chimp<\/a> and other providers have auto-option to send based on audience preference. But I just test different times and look at the open rate over those times &#8211; not necessarily the click-through rate (\u201cCTR\u201d) as that has more to do with the content. But the open rate will tell you how active your audience is at that time. It\u2019s all about testing.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: The best thing for <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/no-bs-guide-to-digital-marketing-terminology\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/no-bs-guide-to-digital-marketing-terminology\/\">CTR<\/a>?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: Again, depends on the industry. For us in a consumer, lifestyle goods industry &#8211; it\u2019s sales.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: What\u2019s something that has worked well or not well for you?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: Business owners tend to think that their customers are more engaged than they actually are. Don\u2019t go in with crazy expectations. They\u2019re not interested in just receiving emails about blog after blog. Your business is the most interesting to yourself, not others. You have to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/the-power-of-personas\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/the-power-of-personas\/\">customers\/subscribers<\/a> with some real value in the email, to retain them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: What is the top tip for preventing emails from <\/strong>landing in junk\/promotions<strong>?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: Yeah, sometimes they do end up in the promos folder, which really affects the open and click-through rate. Your email can be <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/mail\/answer\/81126?hl=en\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/mail\/answer\/81126?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flagged<\/a> by Google (Gmail) for a range of reasons. Such as too many emojis, symbols, or percentages in the text. Just check in with this and continue testing. Ending up in promos is not a good place to be for an email as this folder is far less likely to be checked by the subscriber.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>MA: Overall, tell us your \u2018strategy\u2019 in sending emails.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>TR: There are a lot of parallels between socials and email, I\u2019ve found. For example, for Halloween, we sent out an email with dogs dressed as Halloween characters that had really great engagement &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/measure-metrics-that-matter\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/marketingalec.com\/measure-metrics-that-matter\/\">measured<\/a> in clicks to the website. This is something we also posted to socials. So these emails don\u2019t necessarily have to offer value in the monetary sense through a sale or promo code. Giving your audience something includes making them <a href=\"https:\/\/markettailor.io\/blog\/how-to-use-emotional-language-in-email-marketing\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/markettailor.io\/blog\/how-to-use-emotional-language-in-email-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FEEL<\/a> something.
